Remote Access (VPN)
Remote access technology allows users to connect to office computing resources while out of the office. Often, this may be to access e-mail only via web mail using a browser, but can comprise of access to all office applications and data. Such solutions could be accessed from home, hotels, other offices, Internet cafes, or even from a laptop connected to a mobile phone at a park bench. There are two main technical solutions to provide remote access: remote node and remote control.
This technology can also be used for connecting a small remote office to a main office at low cost, or can also be used for a form of disaster recovery. For example, if a business has two offices and one office becomes inaccessible, those users could continue working from home to the remote access server in the second office. No "hot site" office needs to be arranged.
Thin Client
For offices with more than 50 Personal Computers (PCs), it may be economical to move to a “thin client” environment. This is where users connect to a Windows 2000 or 2003 Terminal Server, and perhaps Citrix, and remotely control sessions on the server from a “dumb” network device. This solution uses the same technology as the remote access, remote control solution; and in fact the same solution can be used for both purposes.
The “dumb” network device can be network devices (not computers) that can cost

200 each. Normal monitors, keyboards, and mice plug into these, so users may not even know they are not working on a normal computer. The devices can also be old PCs. Hardware requirements to run the “thin client” software solution include a 486 processor, 4 mb memory, and 10 mb of disk space.
The thin devices can be in remote connected offices as well, with no degradation of performance. The base operating system of the remote control server is Microsoft Windows 2000 or 2003, so users will most likely be working in the same environment as the office PCs
